What to do while travelling to us

The steps you take before arriving can make a significant difference to your pet’s outcome:

• Call us on 04 259 8688 before you leave, so we can guide you and prepare for your arrival
• Keep your pet warm and still, using a blanket and minimising movement, especially if a fracture is suspected
• Do not give food, water, or any medication unless instructed by our team
• For bleeding wounds: apply gentle, firm pressure with a clean cloth and do not remove it
• For suspected poisoning: do not attempt to induce vomiting, call us first
• For a seizing pet: clear the area of hazards, do not restrain, and time the seizure
• Transport in a carrier or box if possible, to reduce stress and prevent further injury

On-site diagnostics and critical care equipment

In an emergency, rapid intervention and the right equipment save lives. At Paw Sisters we have on-site diagnostic capabilities including blood analysis, digital X-ray, and ultrasound, tools that let our team assess internal injuries and organ function quickly. Our treatment area is equipped for intravenous fluid therapy, oxygen support, wound management, and pain control.

When to seek emergency vet care

Go straight to the clinic or call us immediately if your pet shows any of the following:

• Difficulty breathing, or laboured or very fast breathing
• Collapse or sudden inability to stand
• Suspected poisoning (plants, medication, chocolate, xylitol, household chemicals)
• Uncontrolled bleeding
• Seizures lasting more than 2 minutes, or multiple seizures
• Suspected broken bones after a fall or accident
• A bloated, hard abdomen with distress
• Loss of consciousness or extreme lethargy
• Eye injuries or sudden vision loss
• Inability to urinate for more than 12 hours, especially in male cats
• Birthing complications, such as straining for more than 30 minutes without delivery
• Pale, white, or blue gums

When in doubt, call. It is always better to be seen and told your pet is fine.
